I am magazine – Paralympic Special
This year there is only one month between CP Week and the Beijing Summer Paralympics Games. To celebrate both events, the Winter issue of i am will feature a Paralympic Special as well as the usual range of features and articles on CP.
Our cover story features the story of two Australian teenagers and their journey to this year’s Paralympic Games. i am also goes behind the scenes to meet the team of people who are helping our athletes realise their Paralympic dreams.
‘Celebrating Champions’ Fundraising Appeal
Elly-May Barnes has CP, and is the daughter of legendary rock singer, Jimmy Barnes. Passionate about supporting The Spastic Centre, Elly-May has volunteered to be the face of both The Spastic Centre’s ‘Celebrating Champions’ Appeal which launches in early August and this year’s City2Surf campaign. ‘Celebrating Champions’ promotional campaign
Three adults with CP have been selected as the ‘faces’ of The Spastic Centre’s ‘Celebrating Champions’ campaign. All three are champions because each of them is living their passion.
Jessica Irwin (photographer), Jason Stojanovski (actor) and Andrew Pasterfield (swimmer).
Keep an eye out for Jess, Jason and Andrew in our advertising campaign on bus shelters throughout the Sydney metropolitan region.
The Spastic Centre’s Spence office will host an information stand to help awareness about CP and the needs of people with a disability amongst hospital staff and visitors.

Children’s Small Equipment Expo
The Children’s Small Equipment Expo will showcase a range of mobility and communications equipment to help promote independence and inclusion in the community. More than 25 suppliers will be attending the Expo. Equipment on display will include mealtime and dental care devices, positioning items suitable for playtime, leisure seating, bathing and toileting, toys and communication devices.

Perspectives In Print photography exhibition
The Spastic Centre’s annual Perspective In Print photography exhibition aims to showcase the creative talents of people with CP and other disabilities.
This theme of this year’s event is ‘Perspectives - Opening Night’. It will be lights, camera, action, as guests walk the red carpet to view this year’s stunning entries.

More than 160 volunteers from corporate supporter Eli Lilly will descend on The Spastic Centre's Allambie Heights' site to help give parts of the site a much-needed make-over. In between painting stints, they will also be clearing areas around Venee Burgess House and our Lifestyles Community Access Service. A very big thank you in advance to everyone involved!

Freedom Wheels Bike Clinic & BBQ
On Tuesday 5 August, the team from Freedom Wheels will host a bike clinic at The Spastic Centre’s site in Wagga Wagga.
The aim of the clinics is to assist children with a disability to learn to ride independently. A series of 45 minute assessments will be held throughout the day and a BBQ lunch will be provided.
Please note – appointments are essential.

Volunteer Recruitment – Just Like You! Information Session
The Just Like You! Program for Year 5 students promotes positive perceptions of people with disabilities. The program is co-facilitated by an able-bodied presenter, and a presenter who has CP.
Since 2007, the Just Like You program has visited a number of schools within the Sydney metropolitan and Hunter region.
This Information Session will be held for anyone interested in participating in the program.

Passion for Fashion - Prairiewood
The Spastic Centre’s Prairiewood site will host the inaugural CP Week ‘Passion for Fashion’ fashion parade. The evening will be compared by Elizabeth Evans, Managing Director of RegProm Marketing P/L. Clothes, modelled by our own 'Prairewood Stars' are supplied by retail outlets from Stockland Mall, Wetherill Park and chosen by RegProm stylist Jessica Slarp.

Sportiftz & Recreation Afternoon
The Sportfitz and Recreation team invite clients to an afternoon of fun in the fantastic new Sportfitz gym located in McLeod House. Clients and families can discuss fitness and recreation options with the team, learn about the range of FREE gym, fitness and recreation programs available, and also try out the new accessible gym.
Entertainment and sausage sizzle will be provided.

Les' Magical Mystery Muscial Tour
Les' Magical Mystery Musical Tour is a musical play written and performed by the drama group at St Ives Conmunity Access Service. The play follows one man's journey (performed by our driver, Les) through time as he travels back to the 1950s and his attempts to return to 2008. The group also create the costumes, props and staging. Morning tea will be served at 10.00am and the performance will start at 11.00am. The show will run for approx 30-40 minutes and will be followed by a light lunch.
Throughout the day, St Ives CAS will also showcase art works created by the visual arts group.

The Spastic Centre has been selected as one of the four main charity partners of The Sun Herald City2Surf for 2008. Runners or walkers who enter the Sun Herald City2Surf can nominate The Spastic Centre as their preferred charity and start fundraising for the Centre. All funds will assist children and adults with CP.
