WHAT IS CONDUCTIVE EDUCATION?

Parent Quote
"My goal is for her to stand and walk unassisted. I did not think this was remotely possible until I have seen improvements since she started Conductive Education."

Conductive Education is a systematic and holistic approach to develop problem- solving skills through an educational program for people with cerebral palsy and motor disorders. It is not a therapy, but a multidisciplinary system that enhances the child's physical, cognitive, social skills and emotional well being. Conductive Education is not just an exercise, it is "learning to learn" by intensive and repetitive practice, and, the application of various activities necessary for progress. This applies to motor skills, balance, sensory and perceptual functions, emotional development, language and cognitive functions.

Parent Quote
"I love what Conductive Education is doing for my daughter."

Conductive Education programs occur primarily through groupwork, where students can 'show off' their achievements in an inspiring atmosphere, and can learn to appreciate the achievements of others.

There are four main elements of Conductive Education:

  • The Conductor who teaches, facilitates and motivates the group, observing and modifying the student's performance to ensure that the student works to their potential.
  • The Group where new meaningful skills can be integrated into everyday living.
  • Task Series where tasks to be learned are analysed and divided into a series of smaller steps.
  • Rhythmic Intention assists the student to use their speech or inner speech to express intention. Repeating this intention provides a rhythm or pace at which to carry out the movement, as such, language is used to overcome movement problems.
